The Aquarian Deck is the very first deck I bought when I was a kid. I walked to downtown Pawtucket (when it was more than just empty buildings and homeless people) to the Curly Caterpillar–a hippie shop.
They only had this deck there. I knew it was a tarot deck, I knew what tarot was. I didn’t want anything too…evil. I was brought up Catholic, so the whole idea of reading cards was anathema to me. I was curious. These pictures were Art Deco, and I could handle these pictures without thinking I was getting into anything “dark”.
A few weeks/months later, I bought the Eden Grey book on tarot at a bookstore, in downtown Pawtucket again. Unfortunately, the descriptions in that book didn’t match my deck, and I didn’t understand the symbolism. For instance, the Six of Pentacles in this deck looks very vaguely like the Rider-Waite deck. For years, I thought the deck I had was the only deck in existence.
It took me a few years to get Robin Wood, and then I got the Rider-Waite deck a couple of years later. Then it all clicked. That started my collection.
The above deck is not my original deck. I lost some cards and threw the rest of the deck out. I didn’t want to use it for spells, and I didn’t know what else to do with it. It’s still on sale at Amazon. Heck, what isn’t?
